The California Supreme Court

By AP | Thursday, May 15, 2008 4:30 PM PT

The California Supreme Court, in what was hailed as a monumental victory for gay rights, overturned a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage Thursday. The 4-to-3 ruling paves the way for California to become the second state (Massachusetts is the other) where gay and lesbian residents can marry. The four justices shown here on the top row, including Chief Justice George, were in the majority. Of the seven judges, six were appointed by Republican governors. Moreno, a 2001 nominee of Gov. Gray Davis, is the only exception.
