American Outlook On Future Shows Modest Improvement

The broad index of Americans' outlook for the present and the future, the National Outlook Index, rose 0.5% to 41.3. The modest improvement in overall sentiment was paced by decisive Federal Reserve action to halt a financial meltdown, and by the continued success of President Bush's troop surge in Iraq. Three of the six components made gains, including the Standing in the World Index, up 3.5% to 47.0, the Presidential Leadership Index, up 6.3 to 38.7, and the Direction of the Country Index, which added 0.9% to 34.1. Two gauges fell: the Economic Optimism Index, down 4.5% to 42.5, and the Morals and Ethics component, which dropped 2.2% to 31.6. Quality of Life was unchanged at 54.0.
